Drunk Driving Definitions and Accronyms

DUI: Common Abbreviation for “Driving Under the Influence”. This can refer to either driving under the influence of alcohol or driving under the influence of drugs, narcotics, or substances”

BUI: Common Abbreviation for “Boating Under the Influence”.

DUBAL / UBAL: both mean essentially the same thing. (Driving With an Unlawful Blood Alcohol Level) and “UBAL” (Unlawful Blood Alcohol Level). Both of these are referred to as “Per se DUI”.  Florida DUI Law presumes a person is impaired if their Blood alcohol level is a .08 or over. This is a rebutable presumption, however, the law presumes impairment and the state is not required to prove actual impairment.

FST: A common abbreviation for “Field Sobriety Tests”. Field Sobriety Tests are the tests that are given on the roadside by law enforcement. There are five common Field Sobriety Tests and they are the HGN / VGN, Walk and turn, Romberg Alphabet, one leg stand, and finger to nose.

BAC: A common abbreviation for Breath or Blood alcohol Content. This is determined through the use of either a breath analysis machine, commonly known as the “intoxilyzer” or a blood test.
